My family has been thinking of him a remote car starter and a nice desk chair for work...but those seem uninspired to me.
My dad is super hard to shop for:

1. He has more clothes than anyone I know.
2. Same with tools.
3. He likes sports, but not enough to have any gear
4. He rarely does anything for himself - he spends his weekends working in the yard or around the house.

 
He deserves a great birthday present - In the past, I've bought him shirts, ties, pajamas, fragrance sets, a GPS...they've never felt like enough.  I thought about getting him a nice LED flat screen TV, but that's out of my price range.
